Who We Are
The Spa Creek Youth Brigade, founded by Sam (17) and Tom (18) de los Reyes in January of 2020, was made to help clean Spa Creek, which is located next to Annapolis and Eastport. Spa Creek is directly in front of where we live, so we want to create changes that will take the Creek out of its unhealthy state.
Our Mission
SCYB's mission is to make the Creek a better, cleaner, and safer environment for everyone. We live waterfront of Spa Creek, and we witness the first hand changes to our Creek whenever a rainstorm hits. Many people think that when they pollute or litter on the ground, it won't effect the Bay. However, that is incorrect. During a rainstorm, that gets all washed into the Creek and other rivers around it. This also applies to car gas and fertilizers or manure used in farming. We plan on teaching kids on how pollution is affecting the Creek and what they can do to prevent it. We hope to make Spa Creek cleaner for its inhabitants and future residents.
What We Do
Oyster Gardening
Oysters serve as natural water filters. They feed off of algae and other nutrients in the water, which ultimately serves to purify the water. We have several oyster cages set up in Spa Creek. We routinely and consistently take care of these oysters.
Cleanup Services
We host cleanup services where participants will be provided gear and equipment needed for the cleanup. Participants will pick up trash found in or around the Creek and bring it back to a designated collection area. The trash will then be properly disposed. Participants will be provided with nets, and trash bags.
Spa Creek Conservancy and Lessons
The Spa Creek Youth Brigade teaches how to minimize garbage output, what to do with litter on the ground or in the water, aquatic life, how the Bay affects us and much more!
